: Spring / Summer Update 2015

Just a few of the things we have been up to over the last few months…

PG DIPLOMA IN BUILDING CONSERVATION

Our Conservation Architect, Andy Kitson, has recently gained a Postgraduate Diploma in Building Conservation (Technology and Management) with Distinction from Heriot-Watt University.

Andy commented “undertaking the course has strengthened my understanding of the legislative and philosophical aspects of Building Conservation theory which provides the basis for sound decision-making when working in the historic environment.  The course has also increased my knowledge of conservation and repair techniques which will enable any interventions to be in accordance with recognised good practice”.

STRAHOUN, BUTE TERRACE, MILLPORT

The second phase of works to Strahoun on the Isle of Cumbrae are now substantially complete. The initial phase saw essential repairs carried out to the fabric of the existing house, which dates from the early nineteenth-century, and is Category C-listed.

An extension has now been added which replicates the pedimented late-Victorian wing, giving the house a well-balanced and proportioned appearance, particularly when viewed from Millport Bay. The extension provides a new family kitchen and utility room on the ground floor with a master bedroom suite above. Traditional materials and techniques have been used where possible to provide a seamless transition from old to new.

REPAIRS TO ST. JOHN’S CHURCH, GOUROCK

We are pleased to report that Phase 3 of the programme of repairs is now complete. The works included the careful restoration of the domed cupola surmounting the tower, and repairs to the stonework and leaded glass of the tower window. Works were carried out by Fleming Masonry Contractors and AWM Glass Design. The congregation are working hard to raise funds for further phases of the restoration and we wish them every success with their endeavours.

GLASGOW CENTRAL STATION TOUR

As part of their programme of CPD Events the staff at Stewart Associates went on an organised tour of Glasgow Central Station. The disused railway lines underground were fascinating to see. Tour Guide Paul Lyon provided an intriguing insight into the social history of the station.
